More time needed in the garden is needed!

I am happy to say that the sun has finally returned! It is such a relief to see the sun and lovely blue sky, rather than grey and rain. It will also do my garden the world of good to see the sun again today, and over the next few days if the forecast is correct. I do have a fair amount of work to do out in my garden though, which I will be doing in bits over the next few days as things dry out.

One of the main things I am going to have to do is pest control, unless the birds get there first! As I haven’t been out there for a lot of the week (as I wanted to stay dry after getting wet at work), I have seen plenty of snails and a few caterpillars too that have enjoyed a free lunch. I am going to be out every day picking off snails and caterpillars from my plants.

Some of my plants are looking a little sad from being eaten by such critters, like my remaining cauliflower seedlings!

Cauliflower seedlings are no more!

These peas, which I think are ‘Greenfeast’ peas are mostly intact, but do have a few holes in the leaves. I’m hoping that they will Strat growing really quickly once the sunshine hits them! My ‘Frank’s Pea’ plants are in a similar situation. My sweetness are looking a little sorry for themselves too.

My first lot of broad beans are basically lost, so I will sow some more seeds in their place tomorrow. The second lot of broad beans are looking happier than they were last week, so I am happy with that!

Other jobs include tidying up. That means sweeping, removing any now empty pots and any dead plant material. I will do some more seed sowing to make up for lost seedlings (including poppies, cornflowers, beans, cauliflowers and maybe something else too.

Now that the moaning about pests is over and done with, I can talk about the success I am having. The two lots of peas sown recently. All the seeds sown seem to have germinated, which is fabulous!

My onions, both indoors and outdoors, are doing really well. The indoor ones are still doing better, but that’s not a surprise.

My broccoli and Brussels sprouts seedlings are also doing really well. None have been eaten by anything! I may actually get some veg in a few months!

I have also sown some cauliflower seedlings to replace the ones I lost. I have also kept them indoors to germinate this time, as I really want some home-grown cauliflower!

So that is my Saturday gardening report. It is slowly drying out and I can get some goos work done tomorrow morning in my garden. Until then, happy gardening!
