Friday gardening session

This morning, I had a goos session in the garden, doing things that I was planning on doing last weekend. That didn’t end up happening, so I got myself out this morning and got on with it. I did some more seed sowing, had a little helper and also have an army of snails hidden around the garden!

The first thing that I didn’t do last weekend was sow some seeds that I recently bought. There are two different types of peas-‘Frank’s Pea’ and ‘Purple Podded Dutch’. I already have plenty of peas sown and growing, but I do want a really good crop this year as peas are a family favourite.

I do have to explain the loppers. As regular readers will know, I have a very cute assistant in the garden, Cuddles the cat. While she is very cute (and knows it) and loves being in the garden with me to ‘help’, she also loves digging in my pots at any opportunity! I have put the loppers there to try and stop the digging until I can get some stakes and put them in. They usually stop her causing too much mischief. Here she is posing with her sweet peas.

The other seeds sown were all cacti seeds, the remains of a packet of mixed seeds, along with crystal ice plant (Mesembryanthemum crystalline) and snowball cactus (Mammillaria candida). I am hoping for more success than I have had previously.

I am hoping for more cacti this time!

I had a closer look at my broccoli and Brussels sprouts seedlings today. They have grown so well in the past week or so since they were potted up. While some are bigger than others, there is definitely growth on every single seedling, which is such a good thing.

On seedlings, I have one blue seed holly seedling germination so far. This is really exciting as I think blue seed holly is a lovely plant. I am hoping for more, but we shall see. It is tiny, but it is there!

My two jade plants were potted up a few weeks ago. Both are looking a lot happier than they were beforehand. I am hoping for some flowers in the spring or summer coming as they are really pretty.

While my garden is growing well in general, the rain we have had over the past couple of weeks has brought out the snails again. My broad beans (below) that were healthy and flowering have been mostly eaten. My cornflower seedlings that I was going to pot up today have disappeared, as have two lots of poppies. It is one of the perils of gardening and it’s one of the annoying things about this time of year-we get a new weeks where we get rain. It’s not a crazy amount, but there is a consistent dampness that isn’t pleasant. I have been removing snails as I have found them, but some do get through.

Something has been having a snack!

Looking at the forecast for the next week, we are expecting rain every day for the next week. It’s only two or three millimetres per day, but this doesn’t allow things to dry out. I’d rather that the rain came all at once, but it rarely works that way! we have had 26mm over the past five days.

That is my garden for today. I do need to do some tidying up outside over the weekend, as well as a snail hunt every day! Until next time, happy gardening.
