A bit of fertilising and a walk through the garden

Over the past couple of days, I haven’t done a huge amount of work in the garden, mainly because I am waiting for my seedlings to grow a little bigger before they get potted up. todays post is more about how my plants are growing, rather than the work that I have done in my garden.

Nasturtium ‘Purple Emporer’

The only actual ‘task’ that I have done in my garden is to add some organic fertiliser to my broad beans, nasturtiums and avocado trees. For my beans and nasturtiums, they are now flowering, so I wanted to provide a little extra support for themas they do so. Plus, my beans have had something munching on the leaves too-its a good job that Ive sown some more, just in case the damage gets too much!

On my walk around, I didn’t notice any more pest trouble, apart from the usual little bit off cat damage from where my delightful did a little digging in a pot. The plants are now replanted! The one tomato that I have in my garden is ripening and will be ready in a couple of days if we have the sun.

My first sowing of sweet peas and my ‘Purple Podded Dutch’ peas are growing really well still, especially the peas. I can’t wait for the peas to be ready, so that we can get some pea and ham soup made-this variety of pea is apparently best for soups.

From my seed sowing last weekend, I have got a few things germinating already, which I am really happy about! I sowed som sweet alyssum seeds, which have started germinating. I was surprised to see these appear so quickly as the seed packet had a best before date of July 2025. It just goes to show that, it is worth giving these seeds a go, as you may still get results.

Also germinating this week is at least one cornflower ‘Black Ball’ seedling. I can’t wait to see the very deep purple flowers-it will be a while before that happens, but that’s the whole reason for growing them!

I have signs of germination of sweet peas and of peas ‘Greenest’ too. They are really, really small, and I can’t remember which is which, but I am happy to see signs of life!

Of my older seedlings, the broccoli, cauliflower, sprouts and poppies are all doing really well. For some of my brassicas, there is signs of new leaves growing, but they are still very small.

I am happy with how my garden is going at the moment, especially as we are in the last month of autumn. Thankfully, the weather has cooled down a lot from the hot summer we have just had. Our maximum temperature this week was 22.8 degrees Celsius, while the low was 8.2 degrees celsius (which does feel really cold to me-Ive been in Sydney too long I think!). We have only had 1.8mm of rain this week, but my plants don’t require too much water so I’m not too worried about that at the moment.

That’s all I have for you today. If I do any more work over the next couple of days, I’ll let you know what I get up to! Until next time, happy gardening!
