A quick Sunday gardening session

Last week was such a hot week with the weather, including on Saturday. As a result, I didn’t spend much time in my garden over the weekend-the weather yesterday was more pleasant, but I spent a lot of the day out with my son, so didn’t have much time to spend in the garden anyway.

I’ll talk about of hot weather first, as many of my plants have taken a bit of a battering because of it. Early in week the temperatures were lovely. Come Thursday, we had a high of 40.1 degrees Celsius, with Friday similar and Saturday being 41.1 degrees Celsius and windy.

These constant high temperatures have left my plants a little crispy and tired. Sweetcorn, nasturtiums and my dahlia all have leaves that are a bit dried out. As well as having slightly burnt leaves, some of my sweetcorn plants got a little floppy on Saturday-they just couldn’t get enough water during the heat.

My older tomato plants are mostly at the point of dying. They were in quite a hot area of my little garden anyway, but the heat has finished them off.

On the plus side though, there are some positives in my garden too. My borage is now flowering with its delightful blue-purple flowers.

I also have ripening tomatoes, which I’m looking forward to eating.

I also have flowers and tiny tomatoes on my newer tomato plants.

My sweetcorn is still growing well, and I hope it continues that way until it is ready.

Dahlia flowers are rather pretty-here is my first one to open.

I also still have my beans growing too. They aren’t much bigger, but they are still growing.

Apart from watering as much as possible, I only potted up my little seedlings. There are both vegetable and flower seedlings still alive which is good, and they aren’t much bigger growing well.

There are still plenty of jobs that I need to do out in my garden that involve mainly tidying up and removing dead and dying plant material. That is for the coming weekend.
