After a very wet week, where we have had 127mm of rain over the week it has been really nice to get some sunshine this weekend. I haven’t done much with my sunny weekend if I’m honest, apart from relaxing and watching my brassica seedlings disappear, as if by magic overnight!
I can’t say that I know what has eaten these little brassicas of mine, but I do hope thy were tasty! I should have learnt my lesson by Saturday morning as three had disappeared-the other three should have been brought inside, but I didn’t do that so I lost out.

What I did do on Saturday morning was sow some more broccoli and cauliflower seeds and see where I get this time. I will learn my lesson and keep them inside so that there is less chance of a random little beastie eating my seedlings until they are bigger and stronger!
My other seedlings are going really well, with no hungry visitors visiting them. All I have done with them is turn round the pots every day so that they don’t lean too much in one direction. My first, large sowing is going great guns, with most seeds now germinated. With the second, smaller seed sowing from a couple of weeks later, the seeds are starting to germinate. The beetroot is usually the first to appear, and it’s no different this time, which I am happy about as I love beetroot.

I am also happy to say that I have another cactus that has germinated. I am also a little excited about this, as I now have two very small cacti that are growing from seed. With my Echeveria leaves, from which I am trying to get new plants, there are a few with new plants growing well, even if very small. They are very slow growing compared to other plants, but that is the attraction in some ways-the patience needed to wait for them to grow is worth it in the end I think.

Although I have had some failures this week, I think it’s important to acknowledge these as they are a normal part of gardening in general, as well as for growing vegetables. Despite this, I am also having success with other seedlings so it is far from all bad.
Until next time, happy gardening!

I don’t know if you have an equivalent where you are, but if you do, this might be worth trying.
There are these little square nets that open like umbrellas. They are made to cover food when eating outdoors, to keep the bugs off. When we first transplanted our Korean Pines, I got a bunch of them to make them more visible (they usually have white netting) and to keep them from being stepped on my deer or if the renter’s cows got through the electric fence again, or even accidentally mowed over. I’ve since upgraded to larger chicken wire covers I made for them, but they did the job for the first year. I’ve seen them in different sizes. They might work to cover your seed pots and keep the bugs off, while still allowing moisture and sunlight through.
That sounds like a really good idea-I’ll have to have a look round for something similar
