Yesterday afternoon I had a quick walk around my garden before the rain returned later on yesterday evening. There is new growth around my garden, which is good considering we have had rain for the past week, apart from yesterday afternoon.
I’ll start with my onions. Indoors, my new seeds are doing really well, as you can see in the photo below. Of the older seeds, there is absolutely no sign of any life at all-there is no change from last time I mentioned them!
As for the outdoor onions, it is the same sort of story. The new seed seedlings are doing well and the old ones have no sign of seedlings at all. These outdoor seedlings were just a little slower to get going than those indoors.
Other seedlings that are going well are my little broccoli ‘Waltham’ and brussels sprouts ‘Red Rubine’. They are really getting going and I am so happy to see them growing well. They must be enjoying the very English autumnal we are having here in Sydney at the moment!
The brassica seedlings that have had some trouble over the last few days are my cauliflower seedlings. Most have been eaten-I presume that it was my mates the snails! I still have a couple going though, and may have to do another batch of seed sowing this weekend. Let’s hope these three survive!
My ‘Purple Podded Dutch’ peas are still a scraggly mess, but are growing well enough. The random potato that is growing with them is going nuts too! It has doubled in height since the weekend, which is great. I am wondering how many potatoes I am going to get this time. Hopefully the potatoes that I do get will be bigger than the last lot that I had. If you want to see how small the potatoes were, see this post. They were very tasty, despite their size.
Speaking of potatoes, I have another one in my other potato bag. The original crop was also tiny and I must have missed a potato here too. This is one of my favourite things about gardening-the random surprises that appear sometimes, in this case a potential crop of potatoes that will be gratefully received in the kitchen at home.
Here are some more of my pea plants. At this moment, them seem to be sitting and not doing too much. They are probably waiting for some more sunshine before growing some more, especially the ones that have had an attack of the munchies. Hopefully, the sun will appear on Saturday, after a couple of days of heavy rain.
The final two photos are of the peas that I sowed last weekend. They are thankfully now germinating. No cats have been digging in the soil so far no doubt helped by the weather! Cuddles the cat isn’t the only cute fluff bomb that potters around in my garden so I’m glad that my pots have been left alone1
I am happy that my garden is progressing the way it is. Things are growing and doing so undisturbed. We will see how much rain we get over the next couple of days-we’ve had forecasts of between 40mm and over 100mm between the next two days, and I don’t really know what to believe!
