Flower Friday

On the last Friday of March, here are the flowers that have made my week. We have had a rather humid week this week, with the weather still being really warm. I’m hoping that we actually start getting drier and cooler weather soon!

I always really enjoy seeing the flowers of this Dietes bicolour. Many yellow flowers are really bright and in your face, but this is a little muted by comparison. It is also better for it in some ways too.

I’m including this flowering gum (Columbia ficifolia) with its delightful bright pink flowers because they are fabulous to see. That’s just my opinion, of course, but I want to share a little of the joy on what is a wet day in Sydney so far.

Next up is a plant that I have only recently discovered. It is commonly called the mountain devil, with its binomial name being Lambertia formosa. I have seen it flowering away in both Ku-ring-gai and Lane Cove National Parks over the last six weeks or so-I was taken with the lovely red flowers. This is the only species in the genus that occurs outside of southern Western Australia, existing in only a small area of New South Wales. I’ll be doing a little more reading on this plant as I really like it.

It is the season for many banksia flowers at the moment, including this heath-leaved banksia (Banksia ericifolia read about it here). Banksias are great trees and shrubs to have around when in flower as birds love to enjoy the nectar the flowers produce.

On the same note, here is the coast banksia (read here for more information). I do like the yellow of these flowers too.

I will leave it there for today as I’ll start a huge monologue about how much I love Australian native plants! As much as I do, that is a tale for another day.
