Normally, I would write about the flowers I come across during the week on Friday. This week, I’m going to do it today, on a Thursday. This week has been another really busy week of constant hard work, with this afternoon turning into a grey and wet afternoon. I’m tired and need some bright, colourful flowers to cheer me up, so here we are!
These delicate little liriope flowers are really pretty. They appear in late summer and autumn here in Sydney. Most of the year, liriope is a rather boring strappy-leaved perennial. The flowers turn it into something quite nice to see.

Azaleas have really nice flowers. I don’t like the rest of these shrubs for the rest of the year when they aren’t flowering in Sydney. Lace bug, which turns the leaves all silvery, is a huge pest here and makes the plant plain ugly. The only way to deal properly with this issue is to not plant them here in the first place, as chemicals are the only other way to deal with lace bug, and that is something that I am not happy to recommend.

Tibouchina trees brighten up the whole area in which they grow when they flower. Their delightful purple flowers are delightful, I really do love these trees in autumn. The colour is one of my favourites and the flower shape isn’t too fussy. Lovely!

Another purple plant for you now. This is purple heart, or Tradescantia pallia. This ground cover is native to Mexico and is a popular plant here in Sydney.

I love these red flowers of this pelargonium. I can’t say I’m a huge fan of this genus of plants, it’s more the colours of the flowers that I like. As I have got older, I have started to enjoy seeing strong, bright and vibrant colours, especially with flowers.

Crepe myrtle flowers are always a joy to see. We are coming to the end of their flowering season now, with most fading and going to seed. This is the last chance to enjoy these until next summer now!

Magnolia flowers are always fabulous flowers. This Bull Bay magnolia (read about it here) is busy flowering away in all its glory. There are plenty of flower buds as well as open flowers, which is good if you like the flowers like me. This particular flower was also smelling really nice earlier today-I’ve never smelt these flowers before so that was a nice surprise!

Canna lily flowers are always bright and colourful. This particular orange is one that I do love, mainly because it so bright.

Another really bright flower, this time a bright yellow. This comes from golden trumpet, or Allamanda cathartica.

That is my week in flowers. Bright and colourful and thankfully cheered me up a treat. When it gets here, I wish you a happy weekend.

So many beautiful plants! I didn’t know calla lilies flowered like that – that’s very pretty. I also really like your liriope. I think you can get them here, so that will be something for us to look into!
I actually recognize the Purple Heart! My mother had one as a house plant, when I was a kid.
I find that really interesting because purple heart does so well here in Sydney, so I wouldn’t have thought that it would cope with your winters!
Oh, gosh, it was never outside! My mother had lots of indoor plants. She had two green thumbs and a few green toes, too. I have no idea how she managed it! She just winged it and was pretty brutal with everything.
