I have been doing a lot of thinking about my garden over the past few weeks. More specifically, how can I actually get everything done that I want to get done, while still having time to do other things over the weekend. I have been doing all my gardening at home over the weekend and, over the past couple of months, I have lost a little of my enthusiasm. I don’t like this at all, as getting out in my garden is something I do like doing! I also need to spend more time in my garden in general. So what am I going to do?

The first thing I have decided to do is get out every single day after work during the week. I am already dirty and often a little funky from a day gardening at work, so that issue is out of the way. The main reason for going out as soon as I get home from work is that I can do a few jobs each day and tick them off my list-getting everything done at once on a Saturday or Sunday morning is often off putting or I just don’t have the time. So doing little and often will likely be better for gardening success and enthusiasm.
I have already have a list of jobs to do over the next few days in my garden that should take no more than half an hour or so each afternoon. Once I have completed my jobs for the day, I’ll have a sense of achievement out there. This should hopefully encourage me more too.
Why do I feel I need to change how and when I garden?
Apart from not always getting time, or feeling lazy (or any other reason for not doing my gardening) getting out in my garden more during the week will also allow me to spot any issues more quickly when they arise, which is a good thing. Observation makes up a large part of being a gardener, so getting out there frequently is important.

I also like being outside. It doesn’t matter where it is really, I just enjoy the outdoors. If I have my garden the way I want it, rather than a little too messy, then I can enjoy more too, hopefully with more flowers and food for the kitchen.
Finally, when I am pottering in the garden I often get the company of Cuddles the cat. I love spending time in the garden with my little ball of mischievous fluff, mainly because I enjoy watching her antics outdoors.

I am going to try out my new schedule throughout March and see how I get on. I’m hoping that I find both my enthusiasm and joy in my home gardening again!

That’s a good idea. I think working in smaller bursts, a little every day, makes a lot of sense and takes some of the pressure off.
We are yet to move into our new home, but I’m sure we’ll develop a similar routine.
Have fun in your new garden!
