In the last month of summer, my horticultural work is still in readable busy and non-stop. I’m looking forward to the cooler weather so I’m not as busy all of the time! Here are the few photos that I managed to get while I was busy gardening this week.

First up are some duranta flowers, which are rather pale on this particular plant. I do prefer the straight species over this yellow-leaved cultivar as the colours of the leaves and flowers are deeper colours, but just having flowers around is always far better than having none at all.

In this particular area, we have an area that have so many Pennesetum grasses in the garden beds. At this time of year they are looking a little too hairy and untidy, but that’s fairly normal and they will get cut back over winter. What I do like a lot is the seed heads at the moment, as there is some colour on them and they look more interesting now there are seeds present.

The main flowering season for Indian hawthorn (Raphiolepis spp.) finished a while ago now, but I still see the odd few flowers. I love these plants because they are so tough and still look great in anything the Sydney climate can throw at them.

Crepe myrtles (Lagerstroemia indica) are still flowering away. I love these trees too because they also cope really well in Sydney’s climate and look fabulous. I do prefer the pink flowered ones myself. In saying that, the white ones we have at work are planted as street trees and the impact of them is still really strong.

Liriopes are tough little perennials that are native to Australia. I usually see them as a little boring and plain. When flowering, I am reminded why they are planted in gardens.

Daisies this small remind me of my childhood. I have many happy memories of running wild in fields around where I lived which were often full of little daisies, which is why I’ve included these today.

Finally for today, I have some clivia flowers. These deep orange flowers are my favourite clivias because they stand out so much.

That is my rather busy week in flowers. I keep hoping for a quiet week, but that never seems to happen! I’ll be back again soon, despite my never-ending rushing around.
