Ever since arriving in Australia almost fourteen years ago, I have love the gum trees here (in the genera Eucalyptus, Corymbia and Angophora). There are several reasons for that-the smells of the oils in the leaves (still the best smell in the world, ever!), their ability to lose their bark every year, their flowers (if they can be seen) and their general form. Most of all, apart from the smell of the leaves, is the colour of their bark.

There are so many different colours. This can be from different species naturally having differing colours, like in the photo above, or because of the annual shedding of old bark, like in the photo below. The bark never comes off all at once-it usually comes off in strips, so gives a really nice mottled effect.

The time of day also changes the colours that can be seen on the tree trunks, with dawn and dusk being the best light to see these different colours. Now that summer is here, I drive to work around dawn and the light is amazing. I just wish I had the time to stop and look at these great trees and do some photography! Dusk is also a great time for photography here, but I’m often busy with other stuff! Over Christmas I have some time off work, so i should be able to get out more with my camera!
