Yet again, I have had a rather busy week but that does keep me out of trouble so I can’t complain! As a result, I’ve only had time for watering during my working week and it’s only today, Sunday, that I have been able to do more than this.

What have I done this morning?

I had some more seed potatoes to sow, so that got done this morning. They should have been done a while ago and a couple of these seed potatoes looked a but dodgy, so I didn’t sow them. As I managed to get them for free with a seed order, the fact that I have any potatoes growing in my garden at all is something I am happy with.

I was only going to sow a little more sweetcorn, but as I was searching for the sweetcorn seeds, I picked out some more and sowed those as well. Here is the full list:

• Bean ‘Violet Queen’
• Onion ‘Red Marksman’
• Cauliflower Mini’
• Brussels sprouts ‘Red Rubine’ and ‘Long Island’
• Tomato ‘Green Zebra’, ‘Pink Bumble Bee’ and ‘Tommy Toe’
• Chilli ‘Early Jalapeño’
• Leek ‘Bulgarian Giant’
• Watermelon ‘Golden Midget’

While we are now in late spring, it is still spring, so I’m hoping that the snails and slugs will go somewhere else as it is getting a lot warmer now-but that may just be me hoping that the resulting seedlings wont get eaten (and I have been removing snails out of my garden recently, but they are still eating peas, brassicas and cucurbits).

I have potted up some pumpkin seedlings, along with some beetroot and flower seedlings that have been growing well over the past couple of weeks.

What isn’t growing well?

So, I have already mentioned snails-they have eaten every melon, bean and pumpkin seedlings that has grown so far, and a fairly good job on a few of my brassicas too. It is frustrating, but I usually sow a few more than I need or have space for at any one time as I have expected this. Two of my dahlia tubers have failed to appear at all, so I am on one plant so far.

What is growing well?

My tomatoes are growing really well-some plants are getting quite tall now. Beetroot, sweetcorn, onions and potatoes are also doing really well. My one dahlia plant is growing quite big now as well, so I can’t complain.

Weather

This week has been warm and very humid on a couple of days, which is rather horrid. We have also had a few thunderstorms this week, with the one on Monday night being a good one-the rain was pretty epic-and started when I had to go out too, which was the worst luck!

So, our maximum temperature for the week was 32.8 degrees Celsius, while our lowest temperature was 13.7 degrees Celsius. We have had 16.8mm of rain this week, so not a ridiculous amount, but better than none.
