Gardening in the last week of October 2025

Due to being away last weekend and having a very busy week this week, a fair bit needed doing in my garden, although I haven’t done it all yet! I’m also happy to say that I have seen rain this week too, which has been really needed-we had a total of 36.1mm of rain. Our maximum temperature for the week was 26.3 degrees Celsius, while our lowest temperature was 11.1 degrees Celsius. Thankfully, we didn’t have temperatures that were in the high thirties this week!

The first thing that I did this week was fill up my potato bags with potting mix-my potatoes have been growing really well and should be set hopefully to produce plenty of potatoes for us! They did get a little rain battered over the past couple of days, but I don’t think that they have suffered too much damage! Beyond this, they are going well.

I have also potted up some seedlings. The first ones I potted up were still in seed raising potting mix so they got put into some more suitable potting mic for growing vegetables and flowers. I potted up some beetroot, onions and flowers-although I couldn’t tell you what the flower seedlings are at the moment-they are far too small!

I have potted up some bigger seedlings into their final position, including my remaining brassicas, beetroot, one bean seedling and some onions. What I have done is put some of the beet root and onions into the pot that has my dahlia tubers in. The reason I decided to do this is because I still have only one of the tubers that has started growing above the soil. While the other two will hopefully still appear, I don’t want to waste the potting mix in the pot that can be used for growing other things if the dahlia tubers don’t grow. I don’t like wasting things at all! My one dahlia is growing well.

Now onto my other plants that I have growing. My tomatoes, chillies, sweetcorn, beetroot and onions are growing well. My peas are going ok, although looking a bit moth-eaten- I have found a few slugs and snails around, which were removed out the back-they can make a start on the weeds! The hot weather of the previous week is unlikely to have helped either.

A while ago now, I thought one of my avocado trees was dead, so I cut all the dead branches off the trunk, but didn’t get round to removing the rootball from the pot. The an avocado tree is not actually dead, it has started growing new shoots which is quite good really. The tree will be staying for a while and we will see how it does.

I do have to do some tidying up as the patio needs a good scrub and sweep up, as you can see from some of my photos. This will get done over the next week, probably when I get in from work as I’m usually dirty from a day’s gardening work anyway. I will also plant some more seed potatoes and possibly one or two other things, but that may wait until the weekend-I shall see how I get on!

That is my week in the garden. Until next time, happy gardening!

    • That’s what I enjoy reading about too!

I also enjoy trying to grow things that I shouldn’t be able to-peas are a winter crop here in Sydney, which may be my mine look a little straggly in a spring that has been very warm so far.
