A busy weekend of gardening

This weekend has been a busy one in the garden as I will be away next weekend, thus certain jobs needed doing this weekend. This is what I’ve been up to over the past few days.

Friday, 17/10/25

The first job of the day was to get the sweeping done. It has been a little windy over the past couple of weeks. My potatoes have been growing really, really well so I put some more potting mix into the bags that the potatoes are growing in as I want plenty of potatoes!

On looking around my little garden, I found a new flower. My ‘Purple Emperor’ nasturtiums have been flowering for a while now, with no sign of the ‘Orchid Cream’ nasturtiums, until Friday. I was really happy about that!

I also went to get some potting mix from the local garden centre as I was nearly out, even before I dealt with my potatoes.

Sunday, 19/10/25

Yesterday (Saturday), I didn’t do anything in my garden, as I generally do it all at once on a Sunday morning.

I did some potting up as my first job. From the seedlings still in the seed raising mix their seeds were sown in, I potted up some kale, and several different flower seedlings. As I am rather a lazy gardener in terms of labelling, I think that I have potted up Salvia ‘Pink Sundae’, Zinna elegans, Rudbeckia ‘Praire Sun and Delphinium x belladonna. There are also some false Queen Anne’s lace (Ammi majus) seedlings that haven’t been potted up yet (if I have the seedlings identified correctly, which is a little questionable at the moment) because they are too small.

I also potted up some of my other brassicas-cauliflower, broccoli, sprouts and cabbage along with a couple of tomatoes plants. Some of these have been planted into empty pots, but others were potted into pots with potting mix from last year.

This was done for a couple of reasons-I really don’t like waste and I don’t want to throw the used potting mix into the general waste bin as I don’t have space for a compost heap or bin. This will also save me money as I will have to buy less potting mix over time.

Brassicas and tomatoes potted up

To make this used potting mix more ‘usuable’, I thoroughly mixed in some fresh potting mix, organic fertiliser pellets and granular seaweed before putting the plants into their new home and giving them a good water. I am hoping that my little brassicas and tomatoes will continue to thrive as thy have been.

More brassicas

My potatoes have been growing incredibly well over the past couple of days, to the point that I have put more potting mix into the bags again today. I am so happy with how my potatoes are growing at the minute. I have also ordered some more potato bags as I have a few more seed potatoes waiting to be sown, which will be done as soon as the new bags arrive.

What else is going on in my garden?

I’ll start with the not so good parts. The snails have been busy again over night. My little pumpkin plant that was growing so well has had it’s stem chewed through overnight last night. Not happy about that at all! The one remaining bean plant has gone and the peas in the same pot have suffered a little too. The corn here is doing ok so far though. Thankfully, my peas, corn and melon in other pots are doing well.

To counter the snail assassins, I’ve sown some more pumpkin and bean seeds and hope for success-for the third time (and hopefully lucky), I’ll get somewhere with them this time!

The tomatoes, chillies, onions, etc that got potted up last weekend are doing well. They have all started growing into the extra space that they have. All my plants seem to be loving all the sunshine and warm weather that we have been getting over the past week.

Tomatoes and beetroot doing well

I’ve not mentioned my little cacti that I’ve grown from seed for a while. I still only have two that have germinated but they are growing, even if it’s at an incredibly slow rate!

The weeks weather

This week’s weather has been sunny and warm. On Friday, we were forecast to get storms around Sydney. Quite often, as happened on Friday, the storms went around Turramurra as we are on a bit of a hill. All we got was a little rain-so little it was a bit pointless! Our maximum of the last week was 31.7 degrees Celsius, with the minimum being 12.4 degrees Celsius. Our rain for the week was a measly 1.5mm.

So, that is my weekend in gardening. Busy, productive and putting a smile on my face. While growing food and flowers from seed requires patience and time, it is rather satisfying and that’s before I’ve got any flowers or food! Until next time, happy gardening!
