A busy gardening weekend-14th September 2025

As always, I do the vast majority of my gardening over the weekend. This weekend has been quite busy with various jobs that I wanted to do, from more seed sowing to potting up, while a;low keeping an eye out for any slugs and snails!

The first job of the day was potting up some seedlings that were getting a little crowded in the seedling trays that the seeds originally got sown in. This did take a while to do as there were lots of seedlings to pot up! I still do have some left to do, but these are still a little too small to pot up yet. The seedlings that were potted up include tomatoes, chillies, capsicums, onions, beetroot and cabbage. The seedlings are now permanently outside too. While the overnight temperatures are a little cool still, they are warm enough for the seedlings to survive fine, with the forecast over the next week saying the minimum temperatures overnight are warmer than they have been.

The second job of the day was seed sowing. I wasn’t going to do any at all, but we (myself and my husband) went out for some Vietnamese food at lunchtime yesterday and I really enjoyed having coriander as a bit of a garnish-so I decided there and then to start growing some as I have the seeds in my stash. I’ve never grown any herbs before, but giving it a go is something I really enjoy about gardening.

While I was sowing my coriander seeds, I decided that I would do a little more seed sowing while I was there doing it any way. I sowed:

  • Broccoli ‘Waltham’
  • Cauliflower ‘Mini’
  • Brussels sprouts ‘Red Rubine’ and ‘Long Island’
  • Loofah
  • Cabbage ‘Mini Wombok’, an F1 variety
  • Sunflower ‘Evening Sun’

The seeds sown last weekend are starting to germinate too, but only one or two. As always, it’s exciting to see. There is no sign of the corn, beans or pumpkin yet, but it’s rare to see seeds germinate in a week in my experience.

Germinating plants

This will, of course, keep me busy over the summer, along with the plants that I already have growing. I like having a busy garden of my own-I am not sat in front of the TV, or doing nothing. My garden gets me up and outside being active.

The weather this week has been mostly sunny, apart from Wednesday and Thursday morning when we received 98.1 mm of rain. Our maximum temperature of 26.8 degrees Celsius, with the minimum being 8.6 degrees Celcius, which isn’t that cold by the standards of some parts of the world, but does feel cold here in Sydney!

That is my weekend in gardening, busy and productive which I enjoy-I just hope that I see the results later on in the summer!
