Gardening in the first weekend of spring

Being the first weekend in September 2025, I thought I would get more done in the garden. I consider this the start of spring here in Sydney because the weather is already starting to warm up-the sun feels a lot stronger than it did and that cold chill is no longer in the air at night. We have also had plenty of sunshine over the past week, which has been rally nice.

We have had this blue sky all week

This weekend has been another busy seed sowing weekend. I decided to make the most of the warm weather. Here is what i have sown this weekend:

  • Sweetcorn ‘Golden Bantam’
  • Bean ‘Speckled Cranberry’
  • Onion ‘Red Marksman’ and ‘Amposta Purple’
  • Spring onion ‘Evergreen Trident’
  • Broccoli ‘Green Sprouting’
  • Pumpkin ‘Jack be Little’
  • Cosmos ‘Pinkie’ and ‘White’
  • Zinnia ‘California Giants’
  • Rudbeckia ‘Sahara’ (Rudbeckia hirta ‘Sahara’)
  • Salvia ‘Blue Monday’
  • Delphinium ‘Butterfly Mix’
  • Cabbage ‘Red Drumhead’
  • False Queen Anne’s Lace
  • Anigozanthos manglesii-kangaroo paws
  • Hardenbergia violacea-purple coral pea
  • Carpobrotus virescens-coast pig face
  • Passiflora herbertiana-a native Australian passionfruit
  • Blue sea holly
  • Bee food mix-a range of plants that bees love
  • Blue borage

Sowing the seeds for all these took me the best part of an hour to do morning, but I wanted to get a good head start on on both my food and flowers for the growing season ahead, beyond my favourites (tomatoes, capsicums, chillies and beetroot). I am rather glad that all of these are sown now-most in seed trays, but the sweetcorn, pumpkin and beans were all sown into the pot that I want to grow them in.

I’m hoping my beans, corn and pumpkins grow well in here

I thought that I would give the ‘three sisters’ growing system a go in a pot, to see how well I get on with them. I believe growing corn, beans and squashes together works really well. Not having any actual garden beds to use, I thought I would give it a go in a pot and see what happens-I’ve grown beans and corn in pots individually with some success before, so it will be good to see how I get on with the three together. I’ll report back on progress as the summer progresses.

With my happily growing seedlings, I have decided that they will stay in their current seed trays for one more week-next week I will pot them on into bigger pots. I have started to put them outside during the day now that it is getting warmer and they seem happier. I am hoping that the nights have warmed a little more by next weekend when I pot them up, so they can stay outside full time from then on.

I also got some nets for my plants during the past week. I got them because my brassica seedlings got eaten by either slugs or snails, which I wasn’t happy about. I put one of these nets over my new brassica seedlings, and so far it is working well-I saw a snail making its way across the net yesterday morning so I’m happy I got it set up!

I have also swept up my patio area this morning. It was rather messy with lots of leaves and dust. I wanted to get it clean before too many plants and plant pots appeared in the area. While i know it wont stay tidy for long, I’m glad I got this done too!

There are a few other things that need to be done, but I’ve decided to enjoy the warm sunshine and the rest of my Sunday before work tomorrow instead. The jobs that need doing can be done after work during the week or next weekend instead!
