Today, I had a look at how my seedlings were getting on and I’m pleased to say that I have several that have now germinated.
Im really happy about this as I’m starting all my vegetable seeds early (in late winter) and indoors to protect them from the cold. In the past I have waited until spring before sowing any seeds, so I’m happy at the moment as my early seed sowing is going well.
On counting how many seeds have germinated so far, there are nineteen altogether. Most are still absolutely tiny but it is progress towards growing some of my own food over the spring and summer.

The freshly germinated seedlings are beetroot, tomatoes, chillies and capsicums. There are still plenty that haven’t germinated yet, but it isn’t yet two weeks since they were sown so there is plenty of time for germination to occur!
The weather since the weekend has been cold and wet, so my seedlings are enjoying the warmth indoors and the sun if, and when, it appears in the big windows.
My cauliflower and broccoli seedlings are happy in the cold outside. While growth seems to be slow, they are still small and they have grown since the weekend, which is also a positive thing. The leeks or onions (I still can’t tell which) that I found over the weekend are looking a little happier today too, which shows that they are starting to grow their roots into the soil to get the nutrients they need-and hopefully tasty food for me in the future!

All in all, I am really happy with how things are going so far. Starting my seeds early indoors allows a longer growing season for them to produce the crops I am growing them for. While I would love to sow a few more seeds, some veg and some flowers, I don’t have any more space on the ‘seed table’ in my living room, so I am going to have to wait! Once the weather warms and I’ve potted up some seedlings, and they are moved outside, I can sow some more!
I hope that you have a fruitful gardening week.
