Weekend gardening, 15-17th August 2025

I set myself a few plans for my garden this weekend and its safe to say that I managed to get all of these jobs done, so I actually feel like I’ve been really productive over the weekend.

The first job that I got done was the sweeping up of my patio area. I’ve been wanting to do this for a couple of weeks, but it has been raining so it was done today. Next weekend, I want to wash the areas that need cleaning just so that it’s ready for spring.

While I was sweeping up, I found some plants that I hadn’t potted up, so they got potted up this weekend. I can’t say whether they are leeks or onions, so it will be interesting to see if they survive first of all, and then what vegetables they are as they grow. I enjoy it when things like this happen-the wondering what will happen things keep gardening interesting.

As well as potting up my surprise plants, I did some more seed sowing:

  • Tomatoes: ‘San Marzano’ and ‘Tommy Toe’
  • Capsicum: ‘Sweet Chocolate’ and ‘California Wonder’
  • Beetroot: ‘Mini Gourmet’ and ‘Bulls Blood’
  • Leek: ‘Bulgarian Giant’
Seeds sown this weekend

I have sown more of the tomatoes, capsicums and beetroot because you can never have enough of these three vegetables in my opinion. Leeks are another favourite of mine and something I want to eat more of, so I’m hoping to have some success with them.

With my previous seed sowing sessions, my broccoli and cauliflower seedlings are getting going with new leaves appearing now, which I’m happy about. No more have gone missing from snails having a snack, which is even better! I have only one small cactus seedling as yet, but succulents take a while to get going so I’m not too bothered as yet. From last weekends seed sowing sessions, I have one beetroot seedling that’s germinated. I’m hoping some more will appear over the next week or so. I also have a couple of onion seedlings that have germinated over the past couple of days, so I’ll pot them up next weekend.

Broccoli and cauliflower

Once September and the start of spring comes around, I’m going to be getting several other seeds sown ready for the summer. The initial plan that I have written down is to sow the following:

  • Sweetcorn
  • Strawberries
  • Pumpkin (variety to be determined)
  • Melon (variety to be determined)
  • Cucumber (variety to be determined)
  • Spring onions
  • Bee food mix flowers
  • Loofah
  • Cosmos
  • Pig face
  • Passionflower
  • Kangaroo paw

I have also ordered some cut flower seeds, both a blue colour palate and a ‘hot’ colour palate in orange and reds, which I will also sow when I receive them. I often think that having a vase of flowers is a nice thing to have at home. I also resent buying them when I spend my working life caring for plants so decided that I would grow my own this year.

I will see how I get on this year with what seems to be a really ambitious set of plans now I see it written down. I would rather be too ambitious and not achieve everything I want to in my garden than have a bare patio space, so grand ambition it is!
