Today, I have been dealing with leaves. A lot of that is because leaves are getting in the way of ‘views’ out over the river and some just because I like the look of them. So here is my day in leaves.
Some of the day has been spent cutting back the leaves of some gymea lillies because they were starting to block the widows of the building behind them. While the plants do look rather silly being trimmed back to me, the fact that they are planted there in the first place is a bit odd. Whoever designed the planting scheme wasn’t thinking when they chose gymea lily, as they get rather large when fully grown.

Another job I had today was to remove the flax lilies out of the same garden beds. This was my irritation of the day as flax lilies are a native plant with several benefits including the easing of our workload with the weeding as they spread into a dense covering over time few weeds will grow through flax lilies. If you want to read about flax lillies, here is my post about them: https://flat-cap-gardener.com/2024/10/20/blue-flax-lily/.

Next up, I have the leaves of sea hibiscus (Hibiscus tiliaceus), just because the leaves are a great colour and glossy. I have always loved these leaves of this tree, which also have lovely yellow flowers.

This fine looking agave is Agave attenuata. These agaves can look great like this one, if cared for and kept tidy or they can look awful, so keep you agaves looking tidy! You can read about this agaves here https://flat-cap-gardener.com/2023/08/22/agave-attenuata/.

Another agave here for you, this time I think it’s Aristaloe aristata, or lace aloe. They are randomly in the garden bed in a big pot. For now they will stay there, but will probably get moved at some point.

That’s my day in leaves today. Tomorrow will be a day of helping to clear up lots of mess by the sounds of it.
