Saturday morning gardening in the second weekend of May

This morning has been rather busy in my garden, even though I haven’t yet finished everything. It has been really nice to do things in the garden when the sun is shining today. It has been cool by Sydney standards, but that is a lot nicer for me than the heat and humidity of summer!

Jobs done

The first job of the morning was to do some seed sowing. This time I have sown mostly flower seeds as a lot of the previous batches of flower seedlings have been eaten by some sorts of garden critters! Cat grass and leeks are the only ‘non flower’ seeds sown-leeks because they are tasty and cat grass so that my glamorous but rather mischievous assistant, Cuddles the cat, has found her other cat grass and loves it. If it helps to stop her having a go at eating other plants I have growing then that is an extra bonus.

I sowed the following seeds:

  • Lupin ‘Pixie Delight’
  • Poppy ‘Oriental Royal Wedding’
  • Poppy peony ‘Flemish Antique’
  • Bee Food Mix
  • Leek ‘Bulgarian Giant’
  • Sweet peas-‘Matucana’, ‘America’, ‘Flora Norton’, ‘Spencer Ripple Mix’ and ‘Painted Lady’.
Seeds sown today

The next task was to pot up some previously sown seeds. Some of these seeds have either only just germinated or have yet to germinate (which have been left to grow/germinate as required), while others have outgrown their little pot. The seedlings potted up include some cauliflower, broccoli, leeks and onions. This is all exciting stuff, as I love seeing how plants grow and develop over time.

Seedlings potted up

I still have some cleaning up to do, but that can be done tomorrow.

How are other plants doing?

The broad beans that I had to sow again due to possum mischief are germinating well. Not all of them have done so yet, but the ones that have are growing well which I’m happy about. The said possums haven’t been knowingly seen in my garden again, but they may well be causing mischief when I’m in bed! My peas are also growing well now that they have been potted up and have a bit more space to grow.

My nasturtiums are growing well-they have been putting on plenty of new growth over the past couple of weeks which is great. I am hoping to see some flowers soon, but even if I don’t, the leaves are really good looking so I’m happy. I also found another two tomatoes today-very small, but still there. I have a grand total six tomatoes growing now.

I have a couple of kale seedlings growing too.

Weather

The weather this week has been slightly mixed. We have had plenty of sunshine, with 3.6mm of rain over the past week. Temperatures have been between 12 and 16 degrees Celsius overnight (which feels cold here in Sydney-I have turned rather soft over the past thirteen years since moving here). During the day, temperatures have been in the low twenties, which is a nice temperature for me.

Overall, the weekends gardening has been quite good. Plants are growing, less plants are getting eaten and the weather is cooling down, which is a relief!
