A tidy up and potting up

April was a bit of a disaster in my garden if I’m honest. Caterpillars and possums, along with the odd snail and slug decided that my garden was perfect for their snack time! While infuriating, it isn’t the end of the world. As with anything in life gardening doesn’t always go to plan.

The seed eating culprit

This weekend, I decided that the tomato plants that haven’t got flowers or fruit on them are not going to be staying. They are unlikely to produce anything for me now that we are in the second half of autumn. I have a plant with a few tomatoes and flowers on so that has stayed.

Re-potted brassica

As some possums ate my broad beans completely, I did sow a lot more seeds. Some are now germinating which is good news-let’s hope I eventually get some beans to eat over winter.

These flowers were polished off by possums

I also potted up my brassicas (cauliflower and broccoli) and peas into the space now available. I’m hoping they continue growing well over the next few months for some tasty vegetables to use in the kitchen.

Before I do any more seed sowing or grand plans of what I want to be doing, I am going to let everything I have growing get more established and bigger. This is partly due to limited time available to me, partly because I am off on my travels again soon and I am also sick of caterpillars eating stuff. By the time I come back off my travels, I will have a little more time available, there will be fewer caterpillars around to eat plants due to cold and I won’t be going anywhere again for a while so I can look after any plants properly.

Nasturtiums are growing well

In the mean time, I will look after my little plants and get out into my garden as often as possible. I am also hoping for a sunny week this week as last week was rather wet.
