My Sunday gardening session

I wasn’t really planning on doing much in my garden today, due to the fact that we are expecting ridiculous temperatures again today-more ridiculous as we are getting into the months of autumn. It turns out that I did more than expected, mainly because some of my seedlings sown last Sunday have grown so quickly.

What have I done today?

I started by having a good nosey at all my plants as they were getting watered. It turns out that the Brussels sprout plants that had suffered from leaf miner damage they I spotted earlier in the week have now had all their leaves eaten off by something. I decided that it was time to cut my losses with these and repurpose the pot-which I promptly did by putting in some seedlings sown a few weeks ago. It is worth noting that one Brussels sprout plant is doing fabulous so far, being surrounded by tomatoes-it has no damage at all so far! I have decided that I am going to mix around all my plants as they fit, just to try and prevent too many pests causing trouble!

The seedlings growing really quickly are my peas, bean and sweet peas. Their roots were all poking out of the pots so they got quickly potted up into larger pots. You can sow these seeds directly into their final growing position, but I didn’t have enough growing media to do so at the time-which is why I’ve done it this way instead.

Freshly potted up seedlings

I’ve also sown a few seedlings too. I have sown some Brussels sprouts (both Long Island and Red Rubine varieties, peas, broad beans and some onions. They should also get going quite well with the warm weather we are having at the moment.

I’ve also been out to get some more growing media today. Next weekend, I’ll do some major potting up of all seedlings so that it is sorted.

Today’s weather

The Bureau of Meteorology forecast predicted a mostly sunny day with light winds that are increasing to 40km/hr in the morning and a maximum temperature of 37 degrees Celsius, with a heatwave warning. There is also an extreme fire danger forecast due to strong winds, hot temperatures and humidity being low.

Below is a picture of the weather stats at the time of writing this post. We haven’t quite reached the hottest part of the day yet, that will be around 2.30-3 pm so there is still the potential to reach the highs predicted by the BOM. When I went to look at my weather station monitor, the little weather icons on there (not shown below) suggested there could be rain at some point too.

The stats from my weather station at 1.22pm

For a day where I wasn’t planning on doing any gardening, I have had a successful gardening session today. That’s always a good day. I just wish that I had some food to harvest right now, but that is me being impatient. Going forward, I will be out in my garden every day. Even if it is walking round and checking for pest and disease problems, that is still an important job. The more aware of the happenings in your garden you are, the easier it is to deal with any issues. The only way to learn about your garden is to be out in it as often as you can.
