My Sunday morning gardening session

This morning, I have been out in my garden pottering around, doing some potting up and seed sowing. Yesterday, I went and bought myself some potting mix and a few new packets of seeds. Thankfully, we had 10mm of rain yesterday, so I didn’t need to do any watering this morning, apart from the plants I potted up and seeds I sowed.

The seed packets that I bought yesterday include:

  • Poppy paeony-Papaver paeoniflorum
  • Lupin-Lupinus hartwegii
  • Poppy Oriental Royal Wedding-Papaver orientale
  • Fringed lily-Thysanotus multiflorus
  • The red cap gum-Eucalyptus erythrocorys
  • Heath banksia-Banksia ericifolia
  • Kangaroo paws-Anigozanthus flavidus
  • Sweetcorn, at the request of my son

The seeds sown today include the two types of poppies above, lupins, spring onions, lots of beetroot and Brussels sprouts too. The sweetcorn will get sown during the week. The plants that I potted up were my remaining tomatoes, Brussels sprouts, spring onions and beetroot. I still need to pot up my carnations, but I’ll do those at the same time as the sweetcorn.

All my other plants are looking good so far. I did find some powdery mildew on my random cucurbit yesterday, which I promptly removed to prevent it spreading. I had the same issue around the same time last year, but, by the time I got back off holiday, the powdery mildew had spread to most of my plants, which I wasn’t impressed by!

My little helper sleeping after her fabulous ‘help’

Just after finishing my gardening, I took a weather reading from my weather station. At 9.48 am, it was 28.3 degrees Celsius and 90% humidity. The wind was blowing in a westerly direction, with gusts of up to 1.8 km/hr. Relative pressure was 1009.8 hPa, absolute pressure was 992 hPa. There was no rain at that point. Light levels were 46.9 watts per square metre and the forecast was cloudy. So far, it has only been partly cloudy with a fair amount of sun around.

The forecast from the day from the Bureau of Meteorology says there is a medium chance of showers, likely to occur in the afternoon or evening. There is also a chance of a thunderstorm this afternoon and evening. The max temperature for the day is 28 degrees Celsius.

That is my weekend gardening, which was a rather enjoyable two hours or so. I’ll keep you posted on how my veg is getting on over the next week.
