A busy Saturday morning in the garden

This week has been a really warm week here in Sydney, considering it is only the second week of spring. Today, at 10.52 am the temperature outside is already 27.2 degrees Celsius.

Of my existing plants, my mandarin tree has plenty of flower buds on it, so I hoping for a good crop this year. It also has plenty of new leaf growth on it, so it seems to be happy. Both my avocado trees are alo happy with new growth. As I grew both from seed, it is possible that I won’t ever get any fruit from them, but I do like the fact that I grew them myself. My sweet peas have had flower buds on for several weeks now, and the first flowers have now started to open, which is good. My current lot of peas and beans are still flowering away, I am still waiting for plenty of pods full of peas and beans to harvest. My broccoli and onions are growing well too. As yet, the capsicums and tomatoes sown last week have yet to germinate.

I have also sown some more seeds today, as listed below:

  • Helianthus annuus ‘Evening Sun’
  • Cosmos bipinnatus ‘Rubenza’ and ‘White’
  • Allium cepa ‘Cream Gold’, ‘Red Marksman’ and ‘Bartletta’
  • Allium fistulosum ‘Evergreen Trident’
  • Brassica oleracea ‘Green Sprouting’
  • Solanum lypersicum ‘San Marzano’

I have also moved my cacti outside today. Some of them need temperatures above ten degrees Celsius to be happy, so now that it is warmer, they can be moved outside for the summer. As spring temperatures can vary, I’ll have to keep an eye on them and move them back inside if required.
