A busy Sunday morning in the garden

Today has felt like a really busy morning in the garden, even though I haven’t done a huge amount. It was just time consuming, but needed doing.

The morning started with a trip down to the local garden centre to get some more potting mix as I’d run out. That done, I then potted up my onion seedlings which were starting to look a little anaemic, especially the ones indoors. This is what took so long, as they were small and fiddly to deal with. Over the next few days, I’ll harden off the onions indoors so that all of them are outside-while I was potting up the onions, I noticed that the outdoor ones are starting to look better than the indoor ones now so it is time for the hardening off to happen.

Last week, I noticed that a random strawberry plant had a few offshoots growing from it. I thought there were three, but I have four. All are now potted up and I am hoping for a nice crop of alpine strawberries. That would be lovely!

Once my potting up was done, I did do a couple more jobs before lunch. I decided to sow the following sweet peas:

  • ‘Original’
  • ‘Painted Lady’
  • ‘Spencer Ripple Mix’
  • ‘My Navy’
  • ‘Mill Willmott’

I also cut down the remains of my dahlia. Up until this week, it had green leaves, even if it was looking a little worse for wear. Over the past week, the weather has turn cold rather than being cool. By cold, I’m talking about temperatures under ten degrees Celsius overnight, which I know isn’t cold by a lot of standards, but feels it in Sydney.

At the moment, my garden is doing well. I have had little of any damage from any sort of critter at all this week, which is great. My peas, beans, sprouts and broccoli are growing really well. With the seeds that were sown last weekend, I have three or four germinations, which look like some cauliflower seedlings and one calendula seedling. Nothing else has shown itself yet.

I was going to do the sweeping up today, but time ran away with me. As tomorrow is a public holiday, that will be my main job in the morning so that it’s out of the way early.

Today has been a successful gardening session as I have got what needed to be done, done. As is usually the case, not everything you want to get done does get done. That is a reason to get up and go outside to me, as I enjoy being outdoors in the fresh air. Until next time, happy gardening!
