A Saturday morning gardening session

Saturday morning is often when I have time to do more gardening than on other days of the week. It is quiet, little else is demanding my time, energy and headspace! I also have more energy to get stuff done too-I don’t work on Fridays any more, so I’m more rested than I would otherwise have been.

I started by potting up some of my seedlings. I potted up my broccoli and ‘Red Rubine’ Brussels sprouts. I was going to do my cauliflower seedlings too, but overnight I had a visitor that fancied a snack. They are no more unfortunately. I still have seedlings that will need doing over the next couple of weeks when they get bigger, including poppies and cornflowers. The ‘Long Island’ sprouts that had appeared have now disappeared again, probably due to the visitor I had overnight, but they were struggling anyway.

I mentioned in a post earlier this week that I have been struggling to get any onions to grow so far this autumn and wanted to do an experiment to see if I could get any to grow (read here for more information) and then produce a crop.

I have now sown my seeds. I have some new onion ‘Red Marksman’ and spring onion ‘Evergreen Trident’ seeds that I am comparing to already open packets of seeds. The two old packets of seeds are now fully used up. There are two pots of each variety of seeds-one set of these are outside, while the other are inside next to the window so they still get the sunlight.

While I was sowing my onion seeds, I sowed some more cauliflower seeds. We use cauliflower fairly often in the kitchen, so it would be nice to actually have some from my garden, providing the snails leave me a few!

I still have a few seeds to sow in the garden this weekend, but they can be done tomorrow. I am going to sow two varieties of peas-‘Franks Pea’ and more ‘Purple Podded Dutch’. I love peas and already have a couple of varieties growing well in my garden and want a plentiful supply this year. If I have the space, I’d like to sow some more broad beans too, which I also enjoy. I also have some of these growing, but would like more.

That’s all my gardening for the day. I’ve had a happy and productive gardening session which I am hoping will be successful long term.
