The garden after my holiday

There is always the question of ‘What will my garden look like when I get home?’ whenever I leave it for more than a few days. As I have recently got back from ten days away, that was the second question I had, after making sure my son and cat were fine (which they are). The answer isn’t too bad, but I purposely didn’t do too much beforehand for a couple of reasons. The first is that plants in pots do need attention. The second is that while teenage son was at home, he isn’t always the best at remembering to water, although he does have many other great qualities! To his credit though, he did get out a couple of times to water my plants.

The seedlings that were potted up a few days before going on holiday have been a little hit and miss. Many have died, but I have many brassica that have survived the ten days of my absence, as well as one or two others. I’m happy that some have survived, as they are growing well so far.

Some happy seedlings

My little cosmos plants are also still alive, if a little wonky and leggy. I’ll have to pot these up in the next month or so, but I should get some flowers at some point.

The cosmos are still alive

This is the photo that made me smile the most today. I have a couple of very small tomatoes growing, with lots of flowers on a few plants. How many ripe tomatoes I will get from now is the question I am looking forward to seeing the answer to as it is close to half way through autumn already!

Exciting-little tomatoes are growing.

These beans were rather bare and looking dead, all thanks to the snails! I am more than happy to say they seem to be coming bak really well, with plenty of pretty flowers. Of course, I am hoping for some beans for the kitchen, but if I don’t get that far, the flowers are a good second for me! My broad beans are also growing well, but there are no sign of flowers yet.

Bean flowers aplenty!

My nasturtiums are still growing really, really well. I am again hoping for plenty of flowers over the rest of the year. I did have a look to see if I could see any flower buds but I dint find any. Hopefully, there will be some soon.

Nasturtium leaves

Before I went away, I put my echeverias outside for a little holiday in the fresh air. They seem to be enjoying the experience. What I am also enjoying is that the colours of the leaves has changed, in that it is more varied and interesting. This is something that I really like about these plants, and I have decided to keep them out, so that I can enjoy the colours full time.

Believe it or not, these two pictures are from the same plant, but the colours are very different in a very nice way!

My dahlia is still doing well-this is a small, perfectly formed flower bud. While the plant as a whole is starting to fade, it will be so nice to have one last dahlia flower before winter comes.

Finally, this is my jade plant. I grew this from a cutting I brought home from work and it is doing really well. I also have another one that my son found in the bin room at home. Both do need potting up, which is a job for the next month or so. Neither have flowered since I’ve had them, but they are as equally nice without the flowers.

So, not too drama in the garden over the past couple of weeks. I do have plenty of jobs, to be doing out in my little garden. I am hoping to do a lot of these jobs between now and Monday, when I am back at work. Until next time, happy gardening!
