An hour in the garden

This week, I haven’t been out doing much gardening. It’s been a busy week that has also been quite wet, so the most I have done on most days is have a quick look around.

The gardening I have done has been potting up of my seedlings that were growing really well. This was mainly my brassicas, with one or two others as well. I would usually leave them a week longer, but I am away next weekend because they were rather densely sown.

I was going to sow my new sweet pea seeds that I bought a couple of weeks ago now (I talk bout which ones I got here). I decided against this week, mainly because I am away from home and don’t want to waste seeds as I can’t care for the new seedlings until I get home. That will be my second job (after watering) when I get home.

I usually have some echeverias inside, next to my living room windows. I did put them outside for a bit of a ‘holiday’, where they could have some stronger sunshine (rather than the reduced light that gets filtered by the glass in the window frame). They have also had a bit of a watering by the rain, rather than tap water. One had a visit from a caterpillar that decided it was a rather tasty plant for some lunch! Other than that, they seem happy.

Must be rather tasty!

I am still getting some tomato flowers, even though, there are few tomatoes growing as a result. My one odd-looking tomato is growing well, and still odd. It also had a visiting moth earlier.

My broad beans and peas are growing really well, despite getting a little knocked about by the rain. My other beans, that were fine last week have seen another party of snails coming for a snack overnight, which is not so great. They still have leaves, so they can stay for another couple of weeks-if there is no recovery, they will be removed, along with the tomatoes.

My larger brassicas are still growing well. Im hoping that the cooling weather will encourage their growth more over the next few months.

One brassica growing well-I’m hoping for several more too!

As for the weather over the past week, here are my stats from my weather station. Our maximum temperature was 29.6 degrees Celsius, with our minimum being 16.1 degrees Celsius. For rain this week, we have had 94mm, with 74mm of that in one morning.

That is all for this week in the garden. Over the next few days I will be out there more often again and pottering. Until next time, happy gardening.
