An hour in the garden pottering

Today I spent an hour or so in the garden pottering about and doing a bit of tidying and other gardening tasks. Thankfully, they all got done between the rain showers. This post is what has been going on in my garden today.

The one sweetcorn plant that I was expecting some corn from does technically have some corn there on it, but it doesn’t look that great! I’m going to leave it for now to see if the corn kernels get bigger and more kernel-like than they are currently. I’m hoping that they do get bigger as I haven’t had success with corn this year, at all!

Strange looking sweetcorn

This tiny little plant has some silks present but there is no tassels at the top of the plant, or anywhere near it, so I’m unlikely to get any corn off this one either.

Very small sweetcorn plant

My brassica plants are growing, despite the fact that they have become more holy over the last week or so. Rain has appeared over the past week or so, meaning my friends the snails have reappeared at the same time. You have to love them snails…or rather curse them as I remove them to a different area!

I do have an interesting looking tomato. The funny bit on the bottom seems to have been caused by the petals of the flower not falling off before the tomato grew too big. The tomato seems to be growing ok at the moment though.

I do have a few flowers on my tomato plants. Hopefully, I’ll see a few new tomato’s over the next couple of weeks.

My beans are growing really well at the moment. That’s one thing I love about beans-they grow so quickly that it’s encouraging for me to be out in the garden.

Earlier this week, I did sow some broad beans and pea seeds as the first of what I hope to be several lots of successional sowings of these crops. This is the first seedling to appear, which I am happy to see. Hopefully, the rest will appear over the next week.

I have been busy doing some potting up today. The first to be potted up were these cosmos seedlings. I have a few more to do over the next few days too. Hopefully, these three will look a lot happier in a few days, and a little less droopy!

I also potted up these brassica seedlings. Now that their true leaves have appeared, and because the cotyledons (seed leaves) look a little worse for wear, they are ready for some decent potting mix instead of the seed raising mix they were in.

I did plenty of seed sowing this morning too. I had a list of seeds I wanted to sow, with others being added either because I wanted to start using up open seed packets or because I fancied that particular flower or vegetable. This is a list of what I have sown today:

  • Helichrysum ‘Salmon Rose’, ‘Pink’ and ‘Silvery Rose’
  • Cornflower ‘Classic Fantastic’
  • Calendula (marigold) ‘Double Red’
  • Palaver rhoeas (poppy) ‘Pandora’
  • Spring onion ‘Evergreen Trident’
  • Bee food mix
  • Broccoli ‘Waltham’ and ‘Green Sprouting’
  • Cauliflower ‘Mini’
  • Onion ‘Red Marksman’ and ‘Amposta Purple’

I enjoyed my hour or so doing some potting up and seed sowing in my garden today. These are things I enjoy doing, especially on the promise of food and flowers. I also net do this at work, so it’s good to be able to have the chance to do so at home.

Until next time, happy gardening!
