Mid-week gardening

I have been doing some mid-week gardening for the past couple of days after I get home from work. While I have only been spending around fifteen minutes out in my garden each afternoon, I am starting to feel happier again about my garden.

The first thing I have to say is that I have really enjoyed getting out there doing something after work, even if it is just having a little walk around. I have found that I relax a lot quicker and de-stress after work-currently, which is something that I appreciate immensely as work is no fun at the moment at all! Along the same line as this is the fact that it reminds me that gardening/horticulture and plants are enjoyable pastimes despite the fact that work is no fun. To be reminded of this is also a rather pleasant thing to have.

A lot of the jobs that I have been doing are mainly tidying-up jobs like removing dead plant material, like some dead sweetcorn stalks and dead tomato plant parts. I have also tidied up some pots that were sat around doing absolutely nothing, apart from getting in the way.

I have also done some seed sowing this week too. As it is now ‘meteorological autumn’, I have decided to sow some legumes, which include:

  • Pea ‘Greenfeast’
  • Broad bean ‘Crimson Flowered’ and ‘Aquadulce’
  • Sweet pea ‘Painted Lady’, ‘America’, ‘Original’, ‘Miss Willmott’ and ‘Spencer Ripple Mix’.

Some of my existing plants are doing really well too. I think some of this is down to the fact that the temperatures aren’t quite as high as they have been at some points over the summer and also because the humidity has felt really high, even if the numbers have disagreed a little with how it feels outside!

Many of my tomato plants that I cut back a while ago are now flowering again.

One has a tomato on it too, which is really good.

The bean plants that have been growing for close to three weeks are doing really well with their growth so far and already seem to have flower buds on them.

My borage is still flowering and showing its lovely purple-blue flowers.

That’s my week in gardening so far. I’ll be doing some more during the following few days and hopefully have a tidy garden at the end of it!
