A very hot week in the garden

This week has been rather hot here in Sydney, so I haven’t done too much out in my garden this week, apart from plenty of watering. I have been doing this twice a day when it hasn’t rained at all or when we haven’t had much. How are my plants doing?

The few tomatoes that I have growing already are still growing really well. Most of my tomato plants are looking a little rough due to the heat-even though I water them as well as I can, growing tomatoes in pots is never as good as growing them in the ground. There are still flower buds on these tomatoes, so all ai can do is fertilise and water them as required and hope that I do get some more tomatoes!

My sweetcorn is doing really well. As well as having plenty of tassels, I have plenty of silks on the corn plants too.

My dahlia is still doing well, with the flower buds growing nicely. Due to the hot weather, a couple of leaves have a little of what I think is sunburn on them, although I will do some reading on that later. Most of the plant is ok, thankfully, and there is plenty of new growth too, so I should still get plenty of flowers!

The seeds that I spent time sowing last weekend have started germinating. Considering it’s only been a week, there are a surprising number of new seedlings.

My beans are doing well too-there are many flowers on my plants and there are at least three bean pods on the plants so far-the largest of which is a nice deep purple colour.

I haven’t done any seed sowing, or anything else for that matter, in my garden this week because I have time off over Christmas and the new year, so plan on spending time pottering in the garden then instead. As and when I do get out in the garden, I’ll write about what I get up to.

The weather this week has been absolutely boiling! We have had a few very hot days over the past week-I’d love to bring winter back at this moment in time! Our high temperature of the week was 41.1 degrees Celsius, which was on Friday. Our low temperature was 15.4 degrees Celsius, from overnight earlier in the week. We also had 12.1mm of much needed rain over the past week.

That’s all for my gardening this weekend. I wish you all a merry Christmas.
