Work done in the garden

This week, we have had some really hot days so watering has been my main job this week-on the hotter days, I have been out twice a day doing the watering. Also because of the heat, I haven’t done much in the garden.

I am really happy this week as I now have a few actual tomatoes on my tomato plants, with flowers on all the rest. As tomatoes are one of my favourites, then this really is great news for me! All my tomatoes are now staked as I had missed a few until a very brief thunderstorm came through yesterday and gave them a bit of a lean!

Now on to my dahlias. The one grown from a tuber is doing really well-this got staked as well yesterday. I am really happy with how it’s growing. The dalia that got sat on by the cat and then eaten by snails is no longer in existence-it looked like it was doing something, but the heat finished it off. Finally, the one that got eaten by snails is really growing well again-so ‘Carlos Watermelon’ will hopefully give me flowers later in the summer!

I can now say that I have some beans growing that are no longer seedlings-I must have sown at least ten bean seeds over the past few months and have three plants, due to plenty of snail action! Of the three plants I have, two have flower buds on them, which is great. I wont have a massive crop of beans, but a few will add something to a meal or two.

Also doing well is my borage, potatoes, sweetcorn, onions and a brassica that had some snail damage.

Now for the weather over the past week. We had a very brief thunderstorm yesterday, which gave us a grand total of 1.2mm of rain for the week, which isn’t a lot! Yesterday, we had our high temperature of the week of 40.5 degrees Celsius, with our low was 12.1 degrees Celsius overnight earlier in the week.

That is my rather slow gardening week this week. Over the next couple of weeks, I’ll be doing more in the garden again as I have got my summer plans pretty much sorted out now-more of which I’ll write about either later today or tomorrow, depending on how much time I have today to do it.
