This week hasn’t been very floriferous for my plant photos, but plants aren’t just about the flowers-leaves are often as attractive as the flowers, if not more so.
I’ll start with the leaves of this kalanchoe. This particular plant never sees any attention, apart from a little bit of removal once it starts spreading too far out of its designated harden bed. It is a rather tough plant that thrives in its sunny, often baking hot, location.

Chinese tallow tree (Triadica sebiferum, although I learnt it as Sapium sebiferum) is a wonderful tree in many ways-the leaves are a very pretty shape and have the most wonderful range of colours through autumn-the reds, oranges and yellows are great. The unfortunate thing is that, here in Sydney, it is a bit of a weedy thug-this species self seeds everywhere, even if you can’t se the mother tree in the immediate vicinity! This does mean it is wonderful at being weedy as well as looking good.

The fried egg plant, as Gordonia axillaris is locally known, is called as such due to its lovely white flowers that appear in winter. Locally, this tree is a common street tree, due to its relatively small size, slow growth and tidy nature outside of flowering time (when it is a bit messy). The bark of these trees is also rather nice too-a mottles dark orange in places.

The red berries of the asparagus are a rather good colour, even though the plant itself is an absolute nightmare of a plant-thorny, seeds/fruits spread everywhere and it is a ‘noxious’ weed to use a term borrowed from Australian literature on weeds from recent decades as it spreads quickly and is difficult to remove if left to get established!

Eucalypt leaves are always a favourite of mine-while looking very similar, they do vary in colour and shape. I love the grey-green of these particular leaves.

These leaves are from this canna lily are another favourite of mine, mainly because of the colour.

Finally for today is the flower of this dietes. While this is another plant that’s rather weedy in Australia, it does have rather pretty flowers.

This week has been quiet on the plant front overall as not a lot has stood out as looking good. While a quiet week can be good sometimes, I enjoy it more when I have plenty to look at.
