Long-term plans for my garden

Over the past few weeks, I have been thinking about my patio garden and what I want to do with it over the next year or so. I have been thinking a lot, because over the past year, the weather has been really odd, with the autumn weather only just starting to cool down now. This has meant that I have had far more caterpillars and snails eating my plants this autumn compared to last year-my tomato plants have been decimated over the past week!

A tomato stem without any leaves

The first thing that I want to do is to carry on growing some food, things that I use a lot of like tomatoes, chillies, beetroot, capsicums and spring onions. I also want to grow different varieties of vegetables as they are more interesting to look at and taste better than those bought at the supermarket.

I love having green space I can walk into as and when I please, and without having to leave home to do so. Even if I don’t do any gardening, it’s nice just to have a walk around in my garden. I also have a little company from Cuddles the cat, she always enjoys coming on my rounds with me in the garden.

My ‘helper’ working very hard on the cuteness-physical work in the garden is for us mere mortals!

As much as the caterpillars, snails, slugs and possums have had fun eating my plants this year, I want to see wildlife in my garden. When I get chance, I’m going to do some reading on what species of butterflies and insects are native to my area and what plants they need so that I can hopefully grow some of them.

This guy decided my seedlings were very tasty!

I also enjoy pleasing myself when I’m gardening. I try and do this when I’m at work too, but don’t always get away with that so just doing my own thing is very enjoyable!

I also want lots of flowers in my garden. I have grown to appreciate flowers more as I’ve got older, even hydrangeas are lovely now-they used to be the ultimate ‘old lady’ plant when I was a little girl (maybe I’ve reached the start of my ‘old lady’ period). So more flowers are a must too, if the pests can leave seedlings alone!

Flowers are always great to have around

This weekend, I’m going to sort out my garden. All plants that are mostly eaten will be removed and I’m going to get some seed sowing done. The weather is finally cooling down so I will hopefully have some pest-free plants!
