I was having a walk around my garden today doing the odd bit of maintenance to my plants when I noticed that the broad bean plant with the flowers on it had no flowers left at all! It is almost certain who the culprits are that have been going for my beans and other young vegetables I’ve had growing.

We have been aware of at least one ring tailed possum visiting us over the past week or so, having a good look around. Tonight we have had two at the same time, and it is these two critters that I believe have been going for a lot of my seedlings-mainly brassicas and broad beans! They do normally eat eucalyptus leaves as part of their diet, but are quite happy to go for leafy vegetables, or vegetable leaves, if available.
From the five minutes of reading that I’ve just done, these delightful little native possums are now coming into breeding season, which explains the two of them together. I don’t know much about possums apart from the fact they are nocturnal and are native to Australia, and are a protected species.
The question is of course what am I going to about these two possums? For a start, there isn’t much I can do, but I quite enjoy the fact that there are possums around even if they eat my plants. I am going to get out tomorrow and sow some more broad beans seeds and plenty of them. Hopefully, I will be able to keep enough with leaves and flowers so that I can get some beans!
Unfortunately, I haven’t got any photos of the possums. The fly screen has been kept shut as Cuddles the cat was rather interested in our visitors and seemed more than willing to go out and cause more mischief, and probable damage to the if she could. That’s something that I don’t want, even though she shared her displeasure at that idea!
