Trekking around the centre of Ho Chi Minh City

When I arrived in Ho Chi Minh City, I didn’t really know what to expect as I have never been before. It is busy and chaotic, with more mopeds that I think I’ll ever see again in my life! I have read that the city as a whole is lacking in greenery, which I can’t comment on because I have not been over the whole city-just the centre. What I did see in the city centre is plenty of street trees and other plants growing next to walls, etc.

Busy city streets, complete with trees

While the whole city seems to thrive on chaos, I found the place oddly good fun because of the chaos-I am someone that can’t stand chaos usually-I would rather stay away. I think that it’s because it’s so different to Sydney with so much to see.

Quite often on my travels to various places, I found plants growing out of the walls and tree roots lifting up the pavers on the footpath. With both, it wasn’t a problem-just watch where you are walking and you’ll be ok!

A bit of a tripping hazard?
On the way to the cathedral is this park area

I took a walk down to the Notre Dame Cathedral and Saigon Central Post Office. While the cathedral was unfortunately covered in scaffolding the post office building wasn’t. It is a very nice building. Out the front of the cathedral was a very nice square area where there were lots of plants, which is why I brought it up. They also had plenty of colourful hibiscus flowers, which are one of my favourites.

Here is the post office. It’s not a plant, of course, but it is a rather nice building.

That is it for some of my wanderings around the Ho Chi Minh City streets. While I was there, I loved it, but four nights in this busy city was certainly enough! It’s people are friendly, there is always a lot going on and I did actually feel safe too, which is good as I was there by myself (although I did keep my wits about me). I do have a few more things to talk about while I was there, which will be coming in the next few days.
