It’s been a week of smells and colour

It has been a week of feeling better about things within my horticulture work. While hardly the most riveting of workplaces, it is a far, far better atmosphere to be working in. This has been a relief. While I am still really tired, I have to say I feel more positive than this time last week.

There has been a smell of the week this week. Normally, I don’t really have a notable smell for a week as there is usually either lots of smells or none at all. This week, we have had the constant whiff of society garlic (Thulbagia violacea) which smells as the name suggests. It is really pungent, especially when the leaves get cut. It’s also a smell that lingers in the nose. It isn’t essential really. On the plus side, this is a rather pretty little plant.

We also have plenty of daisies too. Daisies are always nice to look at when out and about, including the tiny yellow flowers of yellow buttons.

Roses are always pretty to look at too. I love the colour of this one. Although I wouldn’t grow roses at home, I have grown to appreciate them over the past year or so.

Gardenias are still in flower at the moment. They can look rather tatty rather quickly, but this is looking really nice at the moment. On looking at the picture below, I can see some sort of pattern on the petals, which is quite nice. I couldn’t see this with my naked eyes-although I can’t say that my eyesight is fabulous so that may not mean much! Either way, it is a pretty flower.

Another photo of the bindweed flowers, just because they are really pretty. Unfortunately, there is no bee today, although I did see plenty of them flying around.

These delightful flowers are from bugleweed, or Ajuga reptans, with the leaves also being rather pretty too. I do like purple-blue flowers, maybe not as much as orange, but I think they come a close second.

Here in Australia, we have a long weekend this weekend. On Sunday, it is Australia Day, so we get Monday off as a public holiday. This means that I will have plenty of time to do some of my home garden jobs that need doing and that I just haven’t got to yet. The first job of the weekend is the potting up/re-potting of my seedlings after the rain we have had recently. Thankfully, most have survived the last few weeks of random wet weather and the heat. The second job is to finally sort through all my seeds and get my plans sorted for the year, as I still haven’t had chance to do so yet. There is also the joy of sweeping up my patio area-something I don’t enjoy doing, but it has to be done.
