My gardening weekend

The past two days have been fairly busy with gardening related stuff that I have been doing. I still have some to do, but that can be done tomorrow morning before it gets too hot and sweaty! There will be some more really hot temperatures over the next few days, which is never fun but can’t be helped-we get the weather we get.

So what have I been doing over the past couple of days? Yesterday (Friday) I went to the garden centre to get some cactus and succulent potting mix, along with some terracotta pots for my new cacti that I bought the previous week. For all of these, I used the birthday present off my lovely sisters who got me a gift voucher for the garden centre that I went to. I’ve also swept up my patio area as it was rather messy with dust and leaves, as patios nearly always are-blink and you find its dirty again! As I was sweeping, I also organised all the tools and potting mix and other gardening related stuff I have collected over time. It does look a lot better!

Today, Saturday, I potted up the following seedlings:

  • Tomato ‘Tommy Toe’
  • Tomato ‘Blue Berries’
  • Tomato ‘Pink Bumble Bee’
  • Tomato ‘San Marzano’
  • Tomato ‘Wapspinicon Peach’
  • Tomato ‘Jaune Flamme’
  • Beetroot ‘Mini Gourmet’
  • Beetroot ‘Heirloom Mix’
  • Beetroot ‘Bulls Blood’
  • Spring onions ‘Evergreen Trident’
  • Brussels sprouts ‘Long Island’
  • Brussels sprouts ‘Red Rubine’
  • Borage
  • Nasturtium ‘Purple Empror’
  • Nasturtium ‘Orchid Cream’
  • Capsicum ‘California Wonder’

All up, this took me about an hour and a half to do, but I’m as happy as Larry when I’m pottering in my garden. The fact that I get flowers and food from my efforts as well as just having plants around is a great thing to me. Long may it continue!

The things I still have to do are;

  • Pot up my cacti that I have recently bought-I’ll do a separate post on these tomorrow.
  • I’ve also got to sort out my avocado trees and other random pots that are taking up the space that can be used by my seedlings as they grow bigger. If I had more space, I would love to keep them but I just don’t have enough space-I have decided my priority is plants that i know will provide me with the things I’m growing them for-the avocado trees were grown from seed and wont necessarily produce any fruit for me-all my seedlings will give me food or flowers (some technically will give me both).
  • The carnations that I am growing have germinated, but Im giving them a little longer to grow before potting them up-they are really tiny.

Today is a rather sunny day. There is the potential for storms further west than where we are later on today apparently, but they aren’t forecast to reach us. Based on recent forecast accuracy, there either won’t be any storms anywhere, or storms will be all over Sydney. Based on this, I trust my weather station far more even though it only gives a conditions forecast (like cloud, sun, rain, etc), not a temperature reading.

For the time of writing, at 12.50pm, my weather station says the temperature is 28.8 degrees Celsius, with 50% humidity. We have light levels of 890.8 Watts per square metre. There is little wind, but when there is any, we have some coming from the east, with the maximum gusts we’ve had today being 5.4 km/h-not fast at all, a delightfully gentle breeze when it’s here. Relative pressure is 1016.7 hPa, while absolute pressure is 999.0 hPa. A quick read of the meaning of absolute and relative pressure (because I didn’t know) is that absolute pressure is the measured atmospheric pressure, while relative pressure is corrected to sea-level conditions (normally do so that meteorologists can compare the pressure at different locations more easily).

After a rather busy morning, I’ve still got a few jobs to do. I have had a really productive gardening session which is the important achievement today.
