Today has been one where I’m busy plant spotting, mainly to try and stop myself getting too bored and fed up! Yes work is something that needs to be done, but some days do seem a little like they drag, hence the plant spotting. Interesting features, new plants or great colours always factor into what peaks in my interest on any particular day.
First up is Malabar plum, which has the binomial name of Syzygium jambos. It is in one of my favourite plant families, Myrtaceae, but is native to countries like India and Indonesia, rather than Australia. I love the flowers, they are a great colours always factor, although the tree isn’t in the best of health!

This is fringe flower, or Loropetalum chinense. I think that these are either the flower buds or the fruit, but I have never seen them before, so who knows! They could be something else entirely.

Next up is bears breaches. I love the these flowers and the muted colours of them. The leaves are pretty cool too (bottom left of picture).

Plumbago flowers are included, just because I like them. I also like hairy flower buds before they open into flowers.

Grass trees are awesome, as I’ve probably said before. I walked past one with several seeds on the scape (stalk that bears flowers) yesterday. They are quite interesting looking I think-although I am a bit of a plant nerd!

Spring means that flowering gums are getting ready to flower in their awesome pinks, reds and oranges. Their flowers are typical of their family, Myrtaceae, but are fabulously bright and colourful.

Eucalyptus trees are great at this time of year as they are losing their bark, their trunks are multicoloured anyway, but especially at this time of year! Below are two Sydney red gums and what is possibly a Sydney blue gum, but I can’t say for certain as it can be similar to another.

Butterfly bush is always pretty when it’s in flower. No butterflies today, but there was some bees around.

The hydrangeas are coming. I have to admit that they were an ‘old lady flower’ as a kid and I didn’t like them at all. They have now grown on me to the point that I like them. At almost 40, I think I’ve reached the old lady status of my childhood thinking!

The agapanthus lowers are also coming. They don’t stick around for long, but they are pretty.

I hope you have enjoyed my plant spotting of the last couple of days and that you all have a good week.

The malabar plum was quite common when I was growing up in Malaysia, but I hardly see them anymore nowadays. I guess it’s because the fruits are kind of sour, so not many people like to eat them.
