In the near future, I’d love to move out of my apartment in Sydney and into a house with a garden large enough to be self sufficient in vegetables and some fruit too.

Over the past couple of years, I’ve got to the point where I don’t want or need the bright lights of the city and rarely take advantages of these, so my house with a garden would have to somewhere rural. As well as a decent garden, there has to be enough space for a sewing room for me and space for the husband to tinker without driving me insane! Also, there should be space for my son to visit as we wouldn’t move until he has finished school and got set up with wherever he is going to end up in life.

In the past ten months, the builders have been working on our building and don’t seem to be anywhere near finished whatsoever. While the plan was for them to be finished by the end of the year, I doubt that they will be. This has started to really get on my nerves! While the work needs doing, there is so much stuff everywhere, including in my patio area where I should now be growing some vegetables, but can’t. I mention this as it feels like we have no space to swing a cat, as the saying goes! At least if we have a house with a decent garden, I can still grow food while work on the house is done if needed. I can’t do that now.

There are a few reasons why I’m so keen to grow all my own food. Firstly, home grown food is always so much tastier than supermarket equivalents, with a much larger range of varieties too. It is also so much fresher-I can go into the garden, harvest my tomatoes or potatoes or whatever and cook them there and then. I also know exactly how it’s been grown, with that not being dictated by cost and a race to the bottom for profit or perfect looks.

Where exactly we end up I can’t say at the moment, but we I’ll somewhere rural within three years. I can’t say that my future plans will be easy to achieve, or to keep it going, but I would enjoy a quieter pace of life!
