The things I have discovered today

My day has been a steady one, which is a good thing. I have spent most of the day weeding in garden beds that are too packed with plants to be spraying anything. Weeding can be slow and monotonous work most of the time, but when you have dense plantings of plants there isn’t really any other option other than to hand weed. It is also the reason why there are as many weeds in there as there are-the previous incumbent hasn’t spent much time in there recently!

The area where I have been working is quite interesting as it is less than two years old. It has been interesting for several reasons, and not for the best reasons. The first thing I noted was how badly planted some of the plants were-the top of the soil the plant comes in should be flush with the top of the soil in the garden bed, not above the soil level and leaving roots exposed, like below.

The roots you can see, especially the finer ones in the bottom right of the photo should be under soil

Laziness is something that I don’t like, and this says laziness completely. When you buy plants from a nursery, they come with labels saying what they are and some basic care instructions. Several plants still had these on them. If someone wants to know what the plant is, then ask the gardener!

Please take these off when a plant is planted!

I’m not sure what this is as yet, but I have seen something similar on a melaleuca or callistemon before. I have removed the nasty bit and when I get chance I’ll see if I identify what it is.

The two photos below show different areas of the same garden bed, with one rather sparse and one really full of plants. To me it’s a little odd that it’s ended up this way and I’m not sure why!

I am hoping to get these areas looking better and fuller with a lot less weeds in the next few months, but hopefully sooner, but certain things take longer than others.

On the plus side, I have found some new plants that I’m going to learn about. This is something that I enjoy doing as it means I’m learning and that is a good thing!
