My gardening at the cusp of summer

Most seedling that I spent time sewing last week have now germinated, which is really good as far as I’m concerned! I’m hoping that the remaining seven little post have seedlings in this time next week!

Seedling sown last week

All existing seedlings are growing well, despite getting a bit battered during a spring storm on Wednesday this past week. The only thing that has suffered is down to my darling assistant, Cuddles the cat, doing some digging for me-it was only one tomato seedling thankfully!

Speaking of the cute assistant, when I was doing some sweeping up this morning, she decided that the pile of leaves and dirt was the perfect spot to sit and look really cute, even if the choice of seat was rather random!

I have also sown some more seeds so I am hopefully going to have plenty of veg to use in the coming months. Here is a list of what I have sown today:

  • Broccoli ‘Waltham Organic’
  • Cauliflower ‘Mini’
  • Cabbage ‘Red Drumhead’
  • Beetroot ‘Bulls Blood’
  • Onion ‘Australian Brown’
  • Bean ‘Painted Lady’
  • Strawberry ‘Bush Alpine’
  • Bean ‘Speckled Cranberry’
  • Brussel sprouts “Long Island’
  • Capsicum ‘Sweet Mini Mix’
  • Tomato San Marzano’
  • Spring onion “Evergreen Trident’
  • Chilli ‘Joe’s Long Cayenne’
  • Tomato ‘Tommy Toe’

I’ll see how successful the strawberry seeds do as last time I tried to grow some from seed, nothing happened. Now that it is a bit warmer, I am hoping that I have more success.

As this is the first year that I am growing vegetables for myself and my family, I’m using it as a big experiment of sorts to learn what works and what doesn’t. This is even more the case as I have to grow everything in pots due to having no actual land to grow things in, just a patio area that is thankfully a half decent size. I also want to show people that there are things you can grow, even if you only have a little space.

  1. Oooh… You’re growing some lovely varieties! Experimenting and seeing what works, and what you and your family like, is one of the fun things about vegetable gardening!
