Epic storm, no power

Last night we had the worst thunder storm that I think I’ve ever seen. It was certainly the loudest I’ve heard! There was also a power cut which has left us without power for over 12 hours so far. While this is not ideal and very much a first world problem, it did make me realise one thing. This is how much light pollution produced in our everyday lives that is completely not necessary.

Walking around in the dark aimlessly until I managed to some candles lit (quite funny last night, I was asking my husband if we had any, just before the power went out), there was utter darkness. No lights on the outside of our building, no lights on things like the wifi router, or the microwave and any host of other household appliances you care to have at home. As I sat eating my breakfast of scrambled eggs (cooked on the gas hob), I just thought that we all pay for this unnecessary light in our homes all the time without thinking about it and why?

I have read in several places (I cannot remember where) over the past few years that light pollution does disturb the lifestyle patterns of wildlife, and a little more recently that it also does the same with plants. This isn’t in any way good, even for us. While I am not advocating for no street lights, I think some thought needs to be given as to the amount of light we have at night that isn’t needed for safety.

This is something that I’m going to try and reduce at home where I can, as we don’t need lights on when sleeping.

On the subject of today, the rain is still here. This means it is rather slow in terms of work. I am not getting soaked to the bone this morning, especially without a change of clothes with me. Whether I am working or waiting for rain to stop, I have some serious thinking about work to do. Over the past week or so, things have started to change in that way and, while it is not a good situation to be in, it is an opportunity to change things for the better for myself as they haven’t been right for a while-since I started with the company if I’m honest, but I could ignore the signs at the time. Now I can’t, but can’t just walk out either. When I do know what exactly is happening, I’ll be able to plan more and work out where I’m going.
